The Songs That Empower Me Every Day

Hello, my beautiful people!

It’s definitely been a minute since I’ve written. Recently, I’ve been very busy, but the good kind of busy. I’ve been working on a lot of cool projects both through my courses at UIUC, and the advertising agencies that I am a part of. I’m really tired in every sense of the word, but I feel like I am working toward a career that I will really love (that I really do love so far).

I’m in a decently good place in my life, which is something that I could not say six months ago. Six months ago, I lost one of the most important people in my life while watching another one of the most important people in my life battle cancer. It’s been a rough year in my family, to say the least.

One thing that helps me through everything in life is music.

Version 2

I’ve always been really into music. I make playlists for myself and my loved ones all the time. My parents always had international music playing in our house when I was growing up, and they actually did that thing you see in movies where they play classical music by the mom’s stomach while she is pregnant. I guess it actually worked.

Throughout this painful time, I’ve had a specific list of songs that I turn on for when I need a certain type of affirmation. These songs are reminders of the type of person I want to be, and the way that I want to interact with the world and other people. These lyrics have helped me pull through a lot of difficult emotions in the past half year, and overall they help me stay empowered and encouraged. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do and can find a similar positive sentiment from them.

The Songs That Empower Me Every Day

“Ella” by Bebé

Favorite Lyric:

“Hoy vas a ser la mujer que te dé la gana de ser
Hoy te vas a querer
Como nadie te ha sabido querer
Hoy vas a mirar pa’lante
Que pa atrás ya te dolió bastante
Una mujer valiente, una mujer sonriente
Mira como pasa.”

English Translation:

“Today you are going to be the woman that you want to be
Today you will love yourself
How nobody has known to love you
Today you are going to look forward
The past already hurt you enough
A brave woman, a smiling woman
Watch how it happens.”

“Girasoles” by Rozalén

Favorite Lyric:

“Y el mundo está lleno de mujeres y hombres buenos
Así que le canto a los valientes
Que llevan por bandera la verdad
A quienes son capaces de sentirse en la piel de los demás
Los que no participan de las injusticias
No miran a otro lado
Los que no se acomodan
Los que riegan simpre su raíz.”

English Translation:

“And the world is full of good women and men
So I sing to the brave
They carry the flag of the truth
To those who are capable of putting themselves in the shoes of others
Those who do not participate in injustices
Those who do not look the other way
Those who do not accommodate
Those who always water their roots.”
