Today, July 26th, 2017, President of The United States of America, Donald J. Trump, has banned transgender individuals from serving in any branch of the armed forces of the United States.
I don’t want this post to be about detailing the political and ethical reasons as to why this is wrong. Here is a link to a New York Times article with more information. Also, if you look at the trending hashtag #TransRightsAreHumanRights, you’ll witness the general public completely tear apart this decision. Per usual, his decision has incomprehensible and faulty logic behind it. I could write you a book on why it is unconstitutional and extremely socially regressive for the president to withhold the option to serve from any American, but I’m going to touch leave that to the NYT and Twitter. There are enough people explaining this all much more eloquently than I ever could.
This post is going to be super short, but with one overwhelming message. Transgender individuals, American or not, you are NOT a burden. Your ability to express your true identity is so important. Your identity is valid. Your rights matter to so many people, and it is horrendous that this country’s president is not one of those people. I personally do not believe that we should have a such a large military (in an ideal world, we shouldn’t have a military at all). But since we do have a military, it should be all-inclusive. Somebody’s gender identity does not affect their ability to execute any sort of duties that come with being enlisted in the armed forces. There is no logical or valid reason to ban transgender individuals from serving. This is all simply transphobic and discriminatory.
Any transgender readers, I stand in solidarity with you and I would like to be an ally to you in any way that I can. You matter. We will make it through the next 3-and-a-half years of Trump hell in unity. Feel free to reach out to me via social media or in the comments section if you need some support right now.
So much love,
